Kriss carbine vs SBR Empty Kriss carbine vs SBR

Post by alcat Thu Jan 05, 2012 6:06 pm

Does anyone out there happen to have a chronograph and access to an SBR and a carbine? I am contemplating the paperwork and stamp for the SBR but I really don't mind the extra length barrel. I was wondering if someone had FPS readings on the same ammo from a carbine vs the short barrel. Since we are dealing with the .45 cartridge, I don't want to lose much velocity/energy.
Thanks.

I could have sworn it was on the manual. But I cant find it now.

For me the biggest issues are not the velocity difference. More so the powder. I have seen and shot the SMG, which i suspect is similar to the SBR or SDP. Fire shoots out. not a lot but noticeable. My Carbine barrel allows for the unburnt powder to be used up as the bullet exits. So much lower IR signature.

That was going to be my next question. We all know that the longer the barrel, the more efficient burn...so do the SBRs require more frequent cleaning? I know from experience that suppressed weapons need a lot more cleaning as the fouled gasses are held back and even blown back into the weapon...but I don't know about barrel lengths.

Not sure. I just clean my Kriss now after every outing.

Here is a video of the SMG I rented. you can see the fire. Interestingly the charging handle flips out sometimes.

Yes, I watched that earlier. I once had a freshly cleaned S&W snub nose model 36. I shot one round out of it as an experiment and then gave it to my Sheriff supervisor friend and asked his staff to examine it to determine if it had been fired or not. They could not tell!

Shooting a .45 out of a longer barrel isnt going to squeeze much more performance out of the .45 cartridge. Its not something you want to shoot @ 100yards (it drops like a rock). A little extra FPS isnt going to help much.

I tried the Carbine Model before the SBR & didnt like it. Mainly for the size and weight of the 16" Carbine I'd rather have something with Rifle Cartridge power.

IMO the Kriss should be used for Close Quarters & out to about 70yards max. The 5" Barrel is going to be fine for that. If you want a little more power out of the .45, go for a +P 185gr Cartridge. That'll give you a bigger performance gain than extra barrel length would.

for the CRB and SBR data sheets go to the Kriss website, click products, when that page loads on the right hand side under the yellow heading "KRISS RESOURCES"

860 SBR at the muzzle vs 875 fps for the carbine! That's not enough to to even be a consideration.
Thanks for the good "head's up." Darn...200 more bucks to the Feds and a long wait!

I knew I had seen it somewhere. For those who dont like the carbine I agree with you 100%. The gun shines as a smg, I know I shot the SMG. But as a pistol or SBR is the closest we will get to owning one. To be perfectly honest, full auto is a waste. Sure it shoots fast and the recoil management helps but I think 2rd burst at such a fast rate of fire is awesome and useable.

Since I moved to NY state I am loving my Kriss Carbine so much more. For those who dont know, NY state requires a license to have a pistol. Sounds simple right? nope. Biggest pain in the rear is getting 4 recommendations that live in my county. I have lived here a year and only know two people that LIVE in my county. Everyone else lives outside it. To make matters worse I have to have that license just to TOUCH a pistol. I cant borrow a pistol even at a USPSA event from a fellow shooting club member. If I get the license and I purchase a pistol, my wife cant touch the pistol without violating the law.

So anyway I looked around for shooting clubs in NY State and New Jersey. Of all the ones near me only one club allowed pistol caliber carbine. I called probably 10 other clubs and they all said "sorry we are not setup for pistol caliber" or "we only shoot pistol" WTF!!!! It is a pistol caliber, the kriss doesnt make the bullets magic and wont hurt your precious range.

Well you can feel my frustration. But I found a great group of guys at the NWRA (North Westchester Rifle Association) They let me run my Kriss at our Action Shooting matches. You can see some of my videos of the matches.

I have not found any ranges or clubs that run high power rifles in a similar fashion. My club holds high power matches but they are 200 yd engagements at a stagnant target. No running and gunning. I want to get into 3 Gun shooting this year. But no place to practice AR shooting. Oh well, at least I can have some fun and safely shoot my Kriss. Working on the pistol license now.

Holy cows! I didn't realize that NY State was getting as bad as Commyfornia! I used to live in Upstate when I was a kid and didn't remember it being that strict.
Get on your legislators and keep the fight going for common sense gun ownership! Good luck, sounds like you'll need it.
You have the same problem we do in Minnesota. We have a bunch of true Americans living in the woods and loving freedom...then we have the Citiots from the Minneapolis area that are constantly trying to impose big city legislation into our little "free" towns. Probably the same in NY as you have your big shot legislators in the Big Apple.
