vector sbr engraving thread...
hi gang,
got my stamp back and i thinking about sending the rifle
to vector for the sbr conversion. it's expensive for them
to replace the barrel. about $500 for the service.
they do not do the engraving however.
does the kriss community have a definitive protocol
for the how, who and where to engrave on the receiver.
also, kriss wants to replace the barrel, can't i just cut
and crown the barrel to size?
thanks for the input.

For the engraving, we have a few members here who are going the SBR route, but I have not seen any pictures posted (yet) on how they handled the engraving. There is a member who put his engraving in the finger recess behind the magwell.
(put this into a Google search ->> engraving site:www.krisstalk.com )
For the cut & crown, it is possible to do without removing the barrel. You will void your warranty, but refer to this thread:

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
A benefit of having Kriss do the conversion is that their information is already engraved on the firearm. Form 4'ing it with them would not require additional engraving as they are the ones making it an SBR.

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
I thought the engraving had to be done in the metal of the reciever so it is not easily altered or removed. Technically the polymer case is not the reciever and is easily removed and can be replaced. Please correct me if I am wrong (and I hope I am) as I am waiting on my stamp and was dreading having to cut a hole in the polymer to engrave on the metal surface like Kriss has done.

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
I agree thats the way I'd do it. To do a good job I'd put the polymer case in a mill ,cut the slot on the other side and then engrave the metal part of the reciever.
not saying what ROLL did is wrong and I think it will still work.

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
HK factory rifles and many other "manufaturers" as you are as an individual with a Form 1 are engraved on the polymer with name/city/state. They always have the serial number on metal. HK UMP sbr conversions are all engraved on the polymer by well regarded sbr engravers such as Orion Arms and have been for many years now.
If factory rifles engrave the maker and city state on polymer I would think it was ok.

Orion Arms will not engrave the Kriss Vector. Went down that road with them for a bit. I'm having a different company handle this soon.

If he sends it to Kriss for the conversion he would still have to engrave with "his" info as he already has it registered on a Form1 with "his" name as the maker. At this point Kriss would just be another gunsmith doing an NFA conversion. BATFE doesn't care who does the actual work.

I had the plastic cut and the metal receiver engraved.

That's exactly my same plan. I wasn't too sure about engraving the right side though. Was it done locally or sent out to an engraver?

I had a local gunsmith do it.

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
I finally got around to SBR my KRISS pistol. Since I live in Washington State, I am not able to do it myself since the newly passed SBR law doesn't allow "manufacturing". So I am having a local NFA dealer/manufacture (Pantel Tactical @ Renton, WA) file a Form4.
The dealer (Josh) and I searched high and low for ideas on where to put the engraving. All we could find were engraving on the polymer lower receiver. According to Josh, that's not really following the letter of the law. The polymer lower receiver shell isn't the serialized part; it's merely a shell. The real serialized "firearm" part, Josh argues, is the metal subframe of the lower receiver. The engraving has to be on that serialized part AND be visible.
Josh and his engraver came up with a couple of ideas. In the end, this is what they did:
Carve out an opening with laser on the right side of the lower, in the same shape as the left side. The laser stopped at the metal part, exposing it. Could have fooled you that it's done at the factory!

Re: vector sbr engraving thread...
Pantel works with an engraver to get that done. I really appreciate his attention to detail and insistence on doing things the right way. I couldn't be any happier with how it turned out.
How this is the difficult part - waiting for my form4 to come back as the KRISS sits in "time out".
